On September 6, 2017 St. John was hit by Category 5 Hurricane Irma. Irma broke records, and many of St. John's structures, including homes, trees and iconic landmarks, such as the Cinnamon Bay Archeology Lab. According to NOAA, Hurricane Irma is the first Category 5 hurricane on record to strike the Leeward Islands. Maximum winds recorded were close to 225 miles per hour. Less than a week later, a second Category 5 hurricane, named Maria, passed just south of the island. Hurricane Maria dropped heavy rains on the island, causing flooding and mudslides, as well as sealing the fate for homes who had lost their roofs during Irma. What Hurricane Irma and Maria did not do was break the spirit of St. John. Across the world, people who have found Virgin Islands National Park to be a sanctuary for their soul are coming together to donate their time, money and resources to rebuilding the island.
Please join the Maritime Foundation at the iconic Grand Banks to show your support for Virgin Island's National Park. Together we will help bring St. John back! Tickets include signature cocktails and an aged-rum tasting, open bar wine and beer, and unlimited sustainably sourced oysters. Ticket proceeds go to the Friends of Virgin Islands National Park's Hurricane Relief Fund.
